Our Approach to Computing

‘We need technology in every pupil and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience our world’

At Bond, we have created a comprehensive progression document based on resources provided by Teach Computing. Computing units are categorised into elements of Digital Literacy, Computer Science and Information Technology.

Children complete computing units half-termly, but digital literacy (online safety, self-identity, privacy and security) is embedded in all subjects and is used on a regular basis to enhance and support the learning of other curriculum areas such as English, Science, DT and PSHE.  To help the children to be competent digital users, they have access to a range of devices including iPads and laptops, which are used to support all areas of the curriculum.

Throughout the year, 50 minute – 1 hour timetabled computing session each week enables explicit teaching of computer science (ranging from programming to computational thinking and computing networks). In computing lessons, children use desktop computers in the Computer Suite which allows them to practice and maintain basic mouse and keyboard skills in each session.  The beginning of each lesson contains a focus on online safety.

Additionally, we provide a ‘tinkering session’ which is a stand-alone lesson which introduces a new app or tool to the children. This gives them the opportunity to experiment and familiarise themselves with the different elements and tools before it can be applied in a more focused approach across the curriculum.

Teachers follow a clear progression of skills which ensure all pupils are challenged in line with their year group expectations and individual abilities and they are given the opportunity to build on their prior knowledge. To support teaching, staff have access a range of resources and planning.

The role of parents is also recognised at Bond and they are involved in understanding how to keep their children safe at home. We frequently use pupil and parent surveys to assess which platforms our pupils are using outside of school and continue to communicate with parents about the dangers or any concerns.
